The interview has been edited for length and clarity. What is psycho-oncology? Cancer distress is the core of this experience.

The experience of a cancer patient most of the time is: I am alone in this, and I have to open up again to make meaning of my life. Most of our patients are transitioning to their new lives at home.

The journey of transitioning from active treatment into survivorship resembles the journey you have taken from the first signs of your body changing [due to cancer].

In my country, stigmatization is also of high importance when we are talking about people with cancer. What are the biggest obstacles to overcome around Europe?

We need to have more in the [medical] curricula… [including] training on [helping with] hard decisions, not just breaking bad news.
